春に姉と二人で岩手の浄土ヶ浜へ撮影旅行にでかけました。
二人で旅をするのは久しぶりの事でした。

アメリカにいたころニューメキシコやアリゾナを一緒に旅した事もありましたが、あのころは姉に頼りっぱなしで旅の計画も運転もすべて姉任せでした。

今回はたいした距離ではありませんが私がハンドルをにぎりました。
細い山道、トンネルは少し怖かったけれど私が運転をした事が嬉しかったです。

浄土ヶ浜へ訪れるような観光客といえば、定年退職した年配の夫婦や観光バスで旅をする老人たちばかりで若い人を見かける事はほとんど無く、かえってその静かな時間を心地よく感じました。寂れた雰囲気をかもしだしている観光地は、写真に写される事をずっと前から静かに待っていたようにも見えました。

季節はずれの民宿は貸しきり状態で、晩御飯の豪勢な事に二人ではしゃぎ、いつもより沢山食べました。魚や米のあまりの美味しさに「やっぱり東北は違うね」などと感心しあったりもしました。

次は何処へ一緒に旅しようかしら？

2007年６月

My sister and I took a short trip to Jodogahama, Iwate.

It had been quite a long time since we'd taken a trip together. When we lived in the U.S. we used to take trips to places like Arizona and New Mexico. I was young at that time, so I depended on my sister to make plans. She always drove.

This time I drove the rental car. The many tunnels and narrow, winding mountain roads were a bit scary. I was happy to get to drive, to have more responsibility...even though there wasn't much driving involved.

Jodogahama is a popular spot for older tourists on second honeymoons and in traveling bus groups. Apart from us, there were hardly any young people there, which made our visit nice and quiet. In a way, this old tourist place seemed as if it had been waiting patiently for someone to come along and photograph it.

We stayed at a typical Japanese-style inn (minshuku). It was off season; the place was empty. The traditional dinner served at the inn was delicious. We talked about how great the food in northern Japan was.
